RECCAM
is a national project funded by the Ministry of
Economy and Competitiveness, and awarded to our group after a competitive
selective process. This project is aimed at assessing seagrass meadows
resilience to global warming by analysing seagrasses responses at ecophysiological, population and ecosystem levels. The basis of this approach
includes mesocosms and field work, as well as modelization.
From
the 1st to the 3rd December 2014, the kick- off meeting
was held at San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia), hosted by the IEO (Spanish
Oceanographic Institute) with the participations of all partners (IEO,
CEAB-CSIC and University of Barcelona). There was also the opportunity to visit
the mesocosms facilities of the IEO that will be used in the project.
The results of this
project are expected to provide new knowledge on different basic aspects with
ecological relevance. Specifically, we open new views on the interaction
between seagrasses and global warming by focusing part of our work on
interaction of temperature and other stressors and on the effects of warming in
plant-herbivore interactions. But, above all, we intend to integrate such basic
aspects into something meaningfull to assist coastal managers and stakeholders
to adapt to or to mitigate climate change effects. We are confident that our
results will be directly applied to the assessment of the vulnerability of
these ecosystems and will help to a better understanding of the future changes,
which will contribute to undertake proper management decisions with robust
scientific basis.
